The Nottawasaga Model Railway has kindly offered to host 2 tours of their railway layout for us again this year. It's been several years since our previous tours.

Their club has been active for 40 years, continuously building, and now they have a 20 x 40 foot layout at their clubhouse. Their outstanding working model railway display represents train stations between Barrie and Meaford as they were in the 1950s.

There are miniature buildings and amazingly detailed landscapes you will recognize.. AND...they have recently added a roundhouse at the Allendale Station! They give a very interesting talk and demonstration of how the trains run and then afterwards their members will answer any questions you may have.

Space restrictions mean each tour will be limited to 15 participants.

There is no cost for this event... but donations to the donation jar are always appreciated.

The second tour is on Wednesday June 10th at 1 pm.

The people on the waitlist for the first tour on May 20th have been registered for the second tour June 10th. If you are no longer able to attend this event, please self-cancel or advise the event organizer who will cancel your registration.

Dr. Roberts is a leading researcher in aging and brain health at Western University and serves as Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Data Analytics and Digital Health in Cognitive Aging and Dementia. With expertise in speech-language pathology, digital health, and wearable sensor technology, her research focuses on cognitive resilience, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and healthy aging.

As we age, our brain health is critical in maintaining independence, quality of life, and meaningful social connections. But what if aging didn’t have to mean cognitive decline? Recent research explores SuperAging - a phenomenon in which some individuals maintain exceptional memory and cognitive function well into their 80s and beyond.

In this talk, we will delve into the science of SuperAging, examining the factors contributing to cognitive resilience and longevity. We’ll explore lifestyle strategies backed by research that can help promote brain health, reduce dementia risk, and foster lifelong cognitive vitality. Whether you are looking to optimize your brain health or support loved ones in aging well, this talk will provide practical, evidence-based strategies for fostering health span.

Over the River and Through the Woods (30 Jul 2026)

The ties that bind – and sometimes choke – are explored with uproarious results in this heartwarming comedy about growing up and growing old. The generation gap is affectionately portrayed through the eyes of four Italian American immigrants who reside over the life of their grandson, Nick Cristano, with loving manipulation. When Nick decides to cut his family ties and move away to pursue his career, the aging grandparents hatch an offbeat scheme to stop their beloved grandson from leaving – with side-splitting results.

A fun-filled journey with hilarious twists leads Nick to the realization that his grandparents have much more to dish out, in the way of advice, than hearty meals. Family is truly the centre – the very heart of life – and this memorable production will speak to all generations of theatregoers.

British Home Children - The "Almost Forgotten Children" (18 Aug 2026)

The “Almost Forgotten Children” How did 100,000 children arrive in Canada to WORK?

Speaker: Joan Knighton
Joan is a former teacher, nurse and Ortho Tech. and now is loving the lecture circuit!! Joan, a proud direct descendant of a British Home Child, will describe their lives and the outcome.

BRITISH HOME CHILDREN

The Origin:
Driven by urban overcrowding and poverty in the Victorian era, charities like Dr. Barnardo’s and the Salvation Army relocated these children to rural Canada to supply cheap agricultural and domestic labor.

The Reality:
Only a small percentage were true orphans. Placed with rural Canadian families, some were treated well, but many others suffered severe neglect, physical abuse, and isolation.

The Aftermath:
The program was largely unregulated. Many Home Children served heroically in the World Wars, and it is estimated that about 10% of the Canadian population today has descended from these child migrants
